30 August, 2016

Bonn, Germany

From 30-31 August 2016 Mr Qian Tang, UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General (ADG) for Education, paid courtesy visits to German ministries and UN agencies in Bonn in an effort to strengthen UNESCO-UNEVOC’s partnership in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in Germany.

Among the agencies visited were the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), German National Commission for UNESCO, UN Volunteers (UNV) and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). His visit reinforced UNESCO’s ties with the agencies and helped further identify new areas for synergy and cooperation to better serve the Member States. The visit provided assurances of UNESCO’s desire to harness the ongoing cooperation, and the message was positively received by the German partners.

UNESCO-UNEVOC is supported by BMBF and BMZ in implementing its Medium-Term Strategy (2015-2017), which is in line with the UNESCO Strategy for TVET (2016-2021). UNESCO-UNEVOC also has close ties with the other UN agencies in the UN Campus Bonn through the One UN approach to achieving sustainable development; in particular UNESCO-UNEVOC has close ties with the UNV through prospects of promoting volunteerism in TVET, and with UNFCCC by addressing climate change through education and training.

The visit also was a chance for Mr Tang to meet with the UNESCO-UNEVOC team and allowed staff to discuss with ADG and the Chief of HRM for Education, Ms Katja Konkola, about UNESCO-related matters. Mr Shyamal Majumdar, Head of UNESCO-UNEVOC, presented an update on UNESCO-UNEVOC’s activities. The presentation highlighted, among other things, the steps taken to further develop UNESCO-UNEVOC’s capacity building and knowledge management and development activities to ensure that the UNEVOC Network remains extensive and active. Mr Tang expressed his appreciation for the work the International Centre is doing and congratulated all staff for their contributions and the team work. He stressed on the key role played by UNESCO-UNEVOC and its Network to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goal 4 on Education, especially its two targets related to TVET.
